About the candidate
Born in 1946, Atiku Abubakar spent two decades in the Nigeria Customs Service, from 1969 to 1989, and later completed a master's degree in international relations. He was Vice-President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. He has contested the presidency several times, standing as a party nominee in 2007, 2019 and 2023. He emerged as the African Democratic Congress candidate for 2027 after defeating Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen for the ticket; a running mate has not yet been named.
